SZ-22 (SHENZHOU-22) is a Chinese manned spacecraft that forms part of China’s expanding human spaceflight program. The spacecraft was launched six months earlier than planned after the Shenzhou 20 return vehicle was found to have a cracked window caused by suspected space debris. Its crew returned to Earth aboard Shenzhou 21, leaving the Shenzhou 21 crew on Tiangong without a flightworthy return craft. Following CMSA safety protocols—requiring a standby Shenzhou spacecraft and Long March 2F rocket to always be ready at Jiuquan—the spacecraft and its launcher were prepared for an emergency launch in just 16 days, much shorter than the usual 45-day launch preparation timeline.
