CREWS PREPARE FOR SPACEWALK - The STS-120 and Expedition 16 crews spent the day putting together tools and making preparations for Saturday’s spacewalk to repair a torn solar array. Using strips of aluminum, a hole punch, bolt connector and 66 feet of wire, astronauts constructed solar array hinge stabilizers that should allow them to take the pressure off of the damaged hinges on the solar array. GERMAN SPY SATELLITE LAUNCHES INTO SPACE - The third of five planned German high-resolution SAR-Lupe radar reconnaissance satellites was successfully launched Nov. 1 by a Russian Cosmos-3M rocket and has begun what is expected to be four weeks of testing before it is transferred to the German armed forces, SAR-Lupe prime contractor OHB-System AG said. SOLAR ARRAY DEPLOY HALTED - Astronauts and ground controllers are looking at apparent damage to the P6 4B solar array spotted by the crew during deployment. THIRD STS-120 SPACEWALK ON TAP TODAY - STS-120 crew members will conduct the mission’s third spacewalk today. The excursion, scheduled to begin at 4:53 a.m. EDT, will be conducted by STS-120 Mission Specialists Scott Parazynski and Doug Wheelock. The spacewalking duo will work at the outboard end of the port truss to assist with the robotic arm attachment of the Port 6 (P6) truss in its new location on the end of the Port 5 (P5) truss.
