NASA SET TO LAUNCH LATEST SATELLITE TO STUDY SUN, IMPROVE SPACE WEATHER FORECAST - NASA is preparing to launch its latest sun-monitoring satellite on a mission to improve space weather prediction. The Iris satellite will observe a little-studied region of the sun that emits ultraviolet light. Scientists hope examining the sun’s lower atmosphere would help them learn more about how this region drives solar wind and powers the corona, the sun’s outer atmosphere seen during eclipses.    More

EUROPE’S ATV-4 FREIGHTER BLASTS OFF TO SPACE STATION EUROPE’S ATV-4 FREIGHTER BLASTS OFF TO SPACE STATION - ATV-4, Europe's unmanned cargo carrier, blasted off from the Kourou space center in French Guiana on Thursday to deliver cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). The fourth Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), named after 20th century theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, is scheduled to dock with the aft port of the Russian Zvezda module on June 15. The European cargo carrier that services the ISS is bringing to the station over 6.5 metric tons of cargo, including fuel, water, food and other necessities. It is scheduled to remain docked with the station until October 2.    More

"PROTON-M" ROCKET WITH EUROPEAN SATELLITE LAUNCHED FROM BAIKONUR - Carrier rocket "Proton-M" with the upper stage "Breeze-M", designed to launch the European satellite communications W3D, was successfully launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (Kazakhstan). Launch was made at the estimated time - 20:02 MSK. The satellite should be separated from the upper stage on May 15 at 05:15 MSK. The contract for the use of rocket "Proton-M" for launch by W3D, made Thales Alenia Space to order one of the leading satellite operators in France Eutelsat, entered the Russian-American joint venture International Launch Services Inc. GLITCH PUTS OFF INDIAN NAVIGATION SATELLITE LAUNCH BY A FORTNIGHT - During the checks, an anomaly was noticed in one of the electro-hydraulic control actuators in the second stage. An electrical glitch in the rocket Saturday forced the Indian space agency to put off its first regional navigation satellite (IRNSS-1A) launch June 12 by two weeks. "During the checks of the polar launch satellite vehicle (PSLV-C22), an anomaly was noticed in one of the electro-hydraulic control actuators in the second stage," the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement in Bangalore.    More

SES LAUNCHES 53RD SATELLITE SES LAUNCHES 53RD SATELLITE - The launch of the SES-6 satellite on board an ILS Proton Breeze M rocket is slated for lift-off at 15h18 Baikonur time on June 3, 2013 (11h18 CET, 5h18 EDT). SES-6 is the 53rd satellite in SES’ global fleet. The satellite is equipped with 43 C-band and 48 Ku-band transponders (36 MHz equivalent). It will enable the delivery of next generation broadcast services, including HD video distribution and mobile services, from its 40.5° West location in geostationary orbit, covering North America, Latin America, Europe and the Atlantic Ocean.    More

SOYUZ CAPSULE DOCKS WITH SPACE STATION - A Soyuz capsule carrying an American, Russian and Italian successfully docked Wednesday with the International Space Station, where the new crew will spend six months conducting a variety of experiments. The docking took place at 8:10 a.m. (0210 GMT, 10:10 p.m. EDT) less than six hours after the Russian spacecraft lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, which Russia leases in Kazakhstan. Live footage provided by NASA TV showed it soaring into the clear night sky. About four minutes later, the announcer said the Soyuz was traveling at 4,700 miles per hour (about 7,500 kilometers per hour).    More
