ENDEAVOUR HOPES TO GET OFF THE GROUND AFTER THREE CONSECUTIVE SCRUBS DUE TO WEATHER - NASA is hoping to launch the space shuttle Endeavour Wednesday evening, if showers and thunderstorms don't force the space agency to scrub liftoff yet again. The next launch window for the mission, officially known as STS-127, opens at 6:03 pm Wednesday— forecasters are calling for a 40% chance of bad weather in the vicinity of Florida's Kennedy Space Center at the time. SOUTH KOREA TO LAUNCH FIRST HOMEGROWN SATELLITE - South Korea plans to send its own satellite into orbit before the end of this month, space officials announced on Tuesday. "It will mark the first time that South Korea will launch a satellite from its own territory, using its own launch vehicle," Park Jeong-Joo, director of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, told reporters on Tuesday. MCLEAN SATELLITE LAUNCH BUSINESS GETS NEW CONTRACT - McLean, Va.-based International Launch Services (ILS) and European satellite operator SES announced Tuesday an agreement to launch the QuetzSat-1 satellite on an ILS Proton rocket in 2011. QuetzSat-1, under construction by Space Systems/Loral, is a high power Ku-band satellite that will orbit Earth at 77 degrees West longitude. QuetzSat-1 will provide coverage over Mexico, North America and Central America. More (Source: Examiner.com - Jul 15)
SPACEX LAUNCH SUCCESSFULLY DELIVERS SATELLITE TO ORBIT - SpaceX launched a Malaysian satellite into orbit late Monday night, the second successful luanch for the private space exploration company, which aims to cut the cost of orbital transport tenfold. After a series of costly failures, SpaceX had its first successful launch last September, but that mission carried a dummy payload. Before that breakthrough, the company lost a Malaysian satellite deployment system along with the ashes of actor James Doohan, who played Scotty on Star Trek, and an inexpensive NASA satellite. LIVE: FALCON 1 TO LAUNCH RAZAKSAT FOR MALAYSIA’S ATSB - Preparations are underway for the fifth launch of the SpaceX Falcon 1 carrier rocket, which will carry the RazakSat spacecraft for Malaysia’s Astronautic Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. The launch, which marks the first flight of a commercial payload aboard a Falcon rocket, is planned for 03:00 GMT (11pm Eastern). RazakSat, formerly known as MACSat, was originally scheduled to fly on the third Falcon 1, in 2006 or 2007. Its launch was delayed after several previous launches failed, but following the Falcon 1’s successful test flight last September, it is finally ready to fly. STS-127 LAUNCH SCRUBBED DUE TO WEATHER - Liftoff of space shuttle Endeavour on the STS-127 mission has been scrubbed once more due to weather within the launch area at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Anvil clouds and storm cells containing lightning flared up toward the end of the countdown, violating stringent launch safety rules. More (Source: NASA - Jul 13)
ENDEAVOUR'S LAUNCH "NO GO" DUE TO WEATHER - Officials at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida have called off today's liftoff of space shuttle Endeavour due to inclement weather. Cumulus clouds and lightning violated rules for launching Endeavour because of weather near the Shuttle Landing Facility. The runway would be needed in the unlikely event that Endeavour would have to make an emergency landing back at Kennedy. Endeavour's next launch attempt is 6:51 p.m. EDT Monday. NASA TV coverage will begin at 1:30 p.m. More (Source: NASA - Jul 12)
ENDEAVOUR'S EXTERNAL TANK FULLY FUELED - Endeavour's external fuel tank has been filled with more than 500,000 gallons of chilled liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellants. The shuttle's trio of main engines will draw from the external tank during the push to orbit. There are no indications of a leak, and fueling has entered the "stable replenish" mode. Countdown clocks have entered a planned hold at T-3 hours and everything remains on schedule for a 7:13 p.m. EDT launch of Endeavour from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. STORMS NASA'S ONLY WORRY FOR SHUTTLE LAUNCH - Thunderstorms are threatening to delay NASA's planned launch Saturday night of space shuttle Endeavour, already running a month late. Endeavour is back from a series of hydrogen gas leaks for a third launch attempt. But forecasters say there is a 60 percent chance that storms could force a postponement. Launch manager Mike Moses said Friday that he's not worrying about the weather since there's nothing he can do about it — even if his name is Moses. More (Source: The Associated Press - Jul 11)
