DOUBLE SATELLITE LAUNCH FOR ARIANE 5 ROCKET TONIGHT - The Ariane 5 rocket is scheduled to deliver a pair of communications satellites into space during an evening launch tonight from its South American spaceport. Liftoff of Europe's workhorse rocket from Kourou, French Guiana, is set for the opening of a 37-minute launch window at 2344 GMT (7:44 p.m. EDT). The mission will be the third for Arianespace so far this year.    More

CHINA DEVELOPS BEIDOU SATELLITE MONITORING SYSTEM - China has developed its Beidou satellite monitoring system for dangerous chemicals transportation, the Beijing Times reported here Monday. The system, which has passed experts review, provides all-day data of dangerous chemicals transportation to Beidou navigation satellite and gives corresponding operational order, the paper said.    More

DIGITAL GLOBE'S NEXT SATELLITE LAUNCHES SEPT. 18 - Satellite imagery seller Digital Globe plans to put its second satellite, WordView-1, into orbit Sept. 18, launching the craft from Vandenburg Air Force Base in California. The exact launch date of the satellite wasn't previously known. WorldView-1 will add to the commercial image database offered for sale by the Longmont-based company.   More

NASA: SHUTTLE MAY BE OK DESPITE 3-INCH HEAT SHIELD GASH - NASA wants to get a closer look at a troubling gouge on the heat shield that protects space shuttle Endeavour's belly to determine if astronauts need to repair the 3-inch wound. The space agency planned to spend several hours Sunday doing a detailed inspection of the 3 1/2-by-2-inch gash. It was caused by a piece of foam that came off the shuttle's external fuel tank during liftoff last week, striking tiles that insulate the ship from the intense heat of re-entry to Earth, NASA said.   More
